Why Your Tradie Website Isn't Making the Phone Ring (and How to Fix It)
You paid for a website. It looks decent. Your mate said it was pretty good.
But the phone isn't ringing any more than it did before.
If that sounds familiar, you're not alone.
Plenty of tradie websites in Canberra look fine but don't do the one job they're there for: getting a potential customer to pick up the phone and call you.
The good news is that the problems are usually simple, and most can be fixed without starting from scratch.
Here are the seven most common reasons a tradie website doesn't bring in work, and what to do about each one.
1. It's not built for someone standing in their kitchen with a burst pipe
Most people looking for a tradie are searching on their phone, often when something has gone wrong. They're stressed, they're in a hurry, and they want to talk to someone.
If your site makes them hunt for your number, pinch and zoom to read the text, or fill out a long form, they'll hit the back button and call the next business on Google.
The fix: Put a tap-to-call button at the top of every page on mobile, ideally one that stays on screen as people scroll. Check your site on your own phone. If you can't call yourself within two taps, neither can your customers.
2. Visitors can't tell what you do or where you work
When someone lands on your site, they should know within about five seconds what you do, where you do it, and how to contact you.
A headline like "Quality Workmanship You Can Trust" sounds nice, but it doesn't tell anyone whether you're a plumber, a landscaper or a painter, or whether you'll come out to Gungahlin.
The fix: Make your main headline plain and specific, for example "Licensed Electrician Servicing Canberra and Queanbeyan." Put your phone number right next to it. Clear beats clever every time.
3. Google doesn't know which suburbs you service
When someone searches "plumber Tuggeranong" or "electrician near me," Google tries to show businesses that clearly serve that area. If your tradie website only says "Canberra" once in the footer, you're making it hard for Google to match you with local searches.
The fix: Mention the suburbs and regions you actually work in, such as Belconnen, Woden, Tuggeranong, Gungahlin, the Inner North and South, and Queanbeyan, in a natural way across your site. If you offer several services, give each one its own page (for example "Switchboard Upgrades Canberra") rather than cramming everything onto one page. Make sure your Google Business Profile links to your website and that your business name, address and phone number match exactly in both places.
4. There's no proof you're the real deal
Customers are letting you into their home. Before they call, they want reassurance that you're licensed, reliable and good at what you do. Stock photos of smiling models in spotless hard hats won't give them that.
The fix: Add the things that build trust quickly:
Your ACT licence number, displayed clearly
Real Google reviews, embedded or quoted on your site
Photos of your own work, your ute and your team (before and after shots work well)
Any industry memberships or warranties you offer
Real photos taken on your phone will beat polished stock images for tradies almost every time.
5. It's too slow
If your site takes more than a few seconds to load on mobile data, a big chunk of visitors will leave before they see anything. Google also takes page speed into account when deciding who ranks.
The fix: Run your site through Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool. Common culprits are oversized photos, too many plugins and cheap hosting. Compressing your images alone can make a noticeable difference.
6. You're asking people to do too many things
Some tradie websites have a contact form, a quote request form, a newsletter signup, social media links, a chat widget and a phone number, all competing for attention. When you give people too many options, they often choose none of them.
The fix: Decide on the one action you want people to take (for most tradies, that's a phone call) and make it the most obvious thing on every page. Keep a short enquiry form for after-hours visitors, but make calling the easy, default choice.
7. It hasn't been touched since it was built
A website that still lists a service you stopped offering, shows photos from 2019 or has a broken link on the contact page quietly tells customers you might not be the most on-the-ball operator. It also gives Google little reason to rank you above competitors who keep their sites fresh.
The fix: Every few months, add a recent job photo, update your services, and check that every button and phone number still works. Adding a short project write-up or answering a common customer question as a blog post helps with SEO too.
Quick checklist: is your tradie website working for you?
Tap-to-call button visible at the top of every page on mobile
Clear headline stating what you do and where
Suburbs and service areas mentioned throughout
Separate pages for each main service
Licence number, reviews and real photos on display
Loads quickly on a phone
One clear call to action, which is to call you
Content updated in the last three months
If you ticked fewer than six, there's a good chance your website is costing you work.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a new website, or can my current one be fixed?
In most cases, your existing site can be improved without starting over. A review will usually show a handful of changes that make the biggest difference.
How long does it take for website changes to bring in more calls?
Changes like adding a call button or clearer headlines can make a difference straight away, because they help the visitors you already have. SEO improvements usually take a few months to show up in Google rankings.
Is a Facebook page enough instead of a website?
Social media is useful, but a website gives you more control, shows up in Google searches, and builds more trust with customers who are comparing tradies.
